1. The Challenge
Families raising autistic children and adults need more than information. They need skills. Research consistently shows that parent training improves communication, social development, and behavior outcomes for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), while reducing caregiver stress and building confidence at home. Our research partners had already proven this with an in-person parent training program grounded in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), led by licensed Behavior Analysts whose energy and real-time responsiveness were core to its success.
The problem was scale. Every new cohort of parents required a live Behavior Analyst in the room, putting a hard ceiling on how many families a growing, underserved community could reach. The program also had to be bilingual, serving English- and Spanish-speaking parents equally rather than treating either as a translated afterthought. And NIDILRR and NIH dissemination standards meant the digital version had to preserve clinical fidelity while staying approachable for parents meeting ASD concepts for the first time, from evidence-based ABA interventions to the therapies research does not support. Whether a family was weeks past a diagnosis or years into advocating for their child, the content had to meet them there without diluting the rigor grant reviewers expect.
2. The Solution
Our task was to translate a dynamic in-person training into online courseware without losing the empathy and momentum that made it work. This wasn't a simple content port. We built a custom editor system that let the research team, not just developers, adjust scenario scripts, roleplay dialogue, page content, and micro-assessments, with changes reflected live. Instructional design became a genuinely collaborative process between our developers and the clinical researchers who knew the material best.
The content originated in a rarely used legacy system. We migrated it into our custom platform and rebuilt it for interactivity. Animated scenarios introduce each topic, and interactive page elements pull learners' focus to key concepts instead of passive reading. Imagery and mixed media explain ASD fundamentals in a way that reframes the diagnosis: not an illness to be cured, but a condition where the right support and accommodation measurably improve quality of life. The tone and pacing throughout echo the empowering spirit of the original in-person sessions.
The full curriculum spans 16 modules, delivered on a customized learning management system (LMS). The LMS lets the client onboard new training organizations, trainers, and parent learners on their own as the program grows, and it captures the usage data the research team relies on to evaluate the model. The interactive assessments go beyond comprehension checks. They help parents build their own implementation plans and put language to how they'll apply ABA strategies at home, closing the gap between learning a concept and using it.
3. The Impact
The finished program is self-directed and self-paced, so parents can fit a rigorous 16-module bilingual curriculum around real family schedules with minimal oversight. It runs on PC, Mac, Chromebook, and tablet, which removes device access as a barrier for families who may only have a shared home computer or a school-issued Chromebook. And because the LMS captures structured learner data, the research team can assess outcomes at scale, satisfying NIH and NIDILRR dissemination requirements and generating evidence for future funding cycles.
The biggest change: the program is no longer limited to one Behavior Analyst and one room at a time. The same clinical fidelity, bilingual access, and emotional tone that defined the in-person course now reach parents anywhere they have a browser, and the client can keep scaling as demand for support grows. Because training organizations, trainers, and parent learners are all self-service through the LMS, the client can onboard new sites without waiting on our team. A one-time build became infrastructure the research program owns and grows on its own timeline.
